Tigers Five-Game Win Streak Snapped at North Texas

DENTON, Texas – The University of Memphis women's basketball team's five-game winning streak came to an end Tuesday night as the Tigers fell 78-66 at North Texas inside The Super Pit in its final regular season game of the season.
Memphis finishes the regular season 13-16 overall and 9-9 in AAC play following tonight's loss.
The Tigers had the offense clicking from tip-off, taking a 14-6 lead heading into the first media timeout behind 10 combined points from Madison Griggs and Ki'Ari Cain. After a quick bucket from Kai Carter made it a 10-point advantage for Memphis, North Texas held the Tigers scoreless for the remaining four minutes of the quarter.
A block in the final possession by Aliyah Green kept the Tigers in front as they took a 16-14 lead into the second quarter.
The Mean Green defense was able to slow the Tigers down in the second quarter. Memphis got free throws from Carter and Shelbee Brown along with a fadeaway jumper from Griggs, but saw its lead evaporate after UNT took a 24-22 lead with just over four minutes left in the half.
North Texas finished the quarter on a 12-4 run to hold a 34-26 lead at the half.
Griggs lit up The Super Pit in the third quarter, draining three-consecutive long-range shots to put the Tigers within four of the Mean Green with 4:34 remaining in the quarter. Late free throws from Brown and Alasia Smith cut the Memphis deficit to 51-47 heading into the final 10 minutes of the game.
North Texas extended its lead out to as much as eight to start the fourth quarter after Tommisha Lampkin laid in a bucket less than two minutes into the frame. However, Memphis struck back to get within five of the Mean Green after Griggs drilled her fifth long ball of the night to make it a 57-52 game.
After UNT pushed its lead back out to eight, the trio of Carter, Cain and Hannah Riddick scored on consecutive possessions to make it a two-point game with 4:24 left on the clock. Both the Tigers and Mean Green traded baskets for the following three minutes until North Texas' DesiRay Kernal sank two free throws with 68 seconds left in the game to make it a 68-62 game.
It was UNT at the charity stripe in the final seconds of the game that sealed the victory as Memphis took the 78-66 loss.
Madison Griggs led the team with 24 points while Kai Carter and Ki'Ari Cain added in 14 and 11 points, respectively.
Seeding for the American Athletic Conference Championship will be officially released on Wednesday, March 6 following the conclusion of games.
