Tigers Late Push Not Enough to Down Mustangs

DALLAS, Texas – The University of Memphis women's basketball team looked to get back in the win column today when they faced off with the Mustangs of SMU for the second time this season. While the Tigers were able to get within reaching distance of the Mustangs, hot shooting from SMU downed Memphis as they suffered the 81-73 loss.
Following tonight's game, Memphis moves to 7-14 overall and 3-7 in AAC play.
After Madison Griggs sank a three-pointer from the wing to start the game, SMU came back with an 8-0 run to take the lead. While the Tigers hung close with baskets from Shelbee Brown and Hannah Riddick, the Mustangs extended their advantage out to as much as 10 in the opening frame.
Memphis faced a 21-16 deficit heading into the second quarter.
The Tigers got two quick scores from Alasia Smith and Raven Sims to cut the Mustangs lead to three, but SMU answered with a 15-3 run to take a 38-23 lead with 3:37 remaining in the first half.
Griggs kept Memphis in the game, scoring nine consecutive points to make it a 10-point ball game. Griggs, along with Riddick, finished out the quarter on an 8-2 run to take the 43-37 SMU lead into halftime.
The third quarter opened just like how the game started – with a three-pointer from Griggs.
SMU pushed its lead out to as much as 10 in the frame after an 11-2 run late in the quarter. The Tigers got back within single digits just before the end of the quarter after Sims, Griggs and Smith all laid in buckets and faced a 68-60 score headed into the final 10 minutes of play.
A defensive battle ensued in the fourth quarter; the Tigers and Mustangs traded buckets through the final minutes of the game with neither team able to string together a run.
While Griggs and Brown were able to score in the final seconds of the game, Memphis faced the 81-73 loss.
Madison Griggs led the team with 25 points while Hannah Riddick and Kai Carter both came off the bench for 15 and 14 points, respectively.
Memphis will be back on the court next Saturday, Feb. 10 when they host Tulane University. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. inside Elma Roane Fieldhouse with coverage available on ESPN+.
