
Tigers Fall on the Road at SMU

DALLAS - The University of Memphis men's basketball team got 33 points and 10 rebounds from David Jones, however, the SMU Mustangs topped the Tigers 106-79 Sunday afternoon inside Moody Coliseum in Dallas.
The Tigers close their Texas swing with an 18-8 overall and 7-6 in American Athletic Conference play, while SMU improved to 19-7 overall and 10-3 in league play.
SMU led from start to finish in the contest, jumping out to a 10-point lead less than five minutes into the action. The Tigers shot 52.0 percent in the first half, but they couldn't wrangle SMU as the Mustangs stormed into the locker room with a 58-36 advantage. SMU dominated the glass in the first 20 minutes, 26-9, and outscored Memphis 17-2 in second-chance points.
The second half was much of the same as the Memphis deficit swelled to 26 on two separate occasions before the final whistle blew on the 106-79 affair.
Memphis hit 27-of-56 shots from the field (48.2 percent), made 9-of-20 from long range (45.0 percent) and connected on 16-of-25 at the stripe (64.0 percent).
SMU was led by 26 points from Ricardo Wright on 9-of-12 shooting. Samuell Williamson and Zhuric Phelps each added 18.
The Mustangs finished 42-of-74 from the floor (56.8 percent) and drained 12-of-30 from distance (40.0 percent).

- Memphis used the starting lineup of Jahvon Quinerly, David Jones, Jaykwon Walton, Nicholas Jourdain and Malcolm Dandridge for the 13th time this season.
- The Tigers are 9-4 in those games.
- David Jones recorded his fourth-straight double-double with a game-high 33 points and 10 boards.
- He shot 12-of-22 from the floor and drained 4-of-9 from long range.
- Nae'Qwan Tomlin was the only other Tiger in double figures with 17 points in 29 minutes off the bench.
- Jahvon Quinerly finished with nine points, a team-high five assists and three rebounds.
- Redshirt junior Joe Cooper saw his first Division I action in the second half.
- He recorded one point, two assists and two steals in 10 minutes.
- SMU outrebounded Memphis 40-29, including 17-11 on the offensive end.
- The 106 points marks just the second time under Penny Hardaway that the Tigers have allowed 100-plus in regulation. Tennessee scored 102 in 2018.
