Dec 08, 2024 | Men's Basketball
MEMPHIS, Tenn– The 16th-ranked University of Memphis men's basketball team fell to Arkansas State, 85-72, in Memphis on Sunday afternoon inside FedExForum.
Redshirt sophomore guard PJ Haggerty matched a season-high 29 points on 8-of-15 shooting while going 11-for-13 at the line with three rebounds and a pair of assists.
Redshirt senior Dain Dainja recorded a double-double off the bench with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Redshirt senior guard Colby Rogers added 11 points.
It was all Arkansas State in the first half. The Red Wolves garnered an early lead at the 16:37 mark and never let up. Using a 14-2 run, Arkansas State extended the lead to 13. The Tigers could not get into a rhythm, only shooting 28% in the opening half.
Memphis ended the frame on a 7-2 run, Dainja scoring all seven points to cut the deficit to 42-29 headed to the break.
The Tigers found momentum to start the second half with baskets from Haggerty and Nichols Jourdain, two huge defensive stops and a steal, three-pointer combo from Rogers to close the gap to as little as eight. Both teams went back and forth with scoring until the Red Wolves went on a 7-2 run to extend their lead back out to 13.
A-State maintained its lead, as the Tigers struggled from the field today, shooting just 36 percent. Memphis tried to make a late comeback with 8:53 to go but, Arkansas State pulled away, sealing the deal.
Turnovers proved to be the downfall for Memphis today, with a season-high of 20 that A-State was able to convert into 17 points.
The Tigers will be on the road playing at (RV) Clemson on Saturday, Dec. 14. Tip-off is scheduled for 10 a.m. CT with coverage available on ESPN2.
