Dec 31, 2024 | Women's Basketball
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis women's basketball will kick off 2025 with a home contest against Wichita State at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 1, at Elma Roane Fieldhouse. The game will be streamed on ESPN+.
The Tigers (2-9) are playing their first conference game of the season and are returning to Elma Roane Fieldhouse for the first time in over five weeks. Prior to the holiday break, they dropped two games in FedEx Forum to No. 18 Tennessee and Louisville.
Tilly Boler (16.6 ppg) and Alasia Smith (11.6 ppg, 7.1 rpg) have done the heavy lifting for the Tigers throughout a challenging non-conference schedule that was rated the 29th-toughest by BartTorvik.com. DeeDee Hagemann has provided a jolt at the point guard position since making her Memphis debut against Tennessee, averaging 16 points and eight assists through two games.
Wichita State (6-8) will be playing their second conference game of the season, having lost to North Texas, 62-56, at home on Dec. 29. The Shockers played their share of tough non-conference opponents, as well, playing No. 9 Oklahoma, Creighton, Kansas and Missouri.
The Tigers are 6-5 all-time against WSU, with the teams alternating wins the last four meetings dating back to the 2021-22 season. Last season, the Shockers narrowly won in Wichita, 71-66, behind 17 points and 14 rebounds from Daniela Abies. Hannah Riddick had 19 points on 7-of-12 shooting for Memphis.
Like the Tigers, Wichita State has three double-digit scorers, led by Jayla Murray (11.5 ppg, 5.4 rpg) and Salese Blow (11.4, 2.2 apg). They are coached by Terry Nooner, in his second year at the helm after being an associate head coach for Kansas for three years. He also has had coaching stints at Texas, Maryland, Alabama and Southern Illinois along with one season as a player development coach with the Cleveland Cavaliers.
