Tigers Hold On For Four Set Win Over UTSA

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The University of Memphis volleyball team got back in the win column tonight after a 3-1 win over UTSA on the road.
The Tigers (12-14, 6-8 AAC) struggled to pull away from the Roadrunners in the opening set, edging UTSA out 15-13 heading into the media timeout after a big swing and kill from Jasmyn Tate. Memphis used this momentum to finish out the set on a 6-0 run that was capped off with three consecutive kills from Tiffany Snook, Hannah Jones and Jordan Heatherly.
Another close score started out the second set before a UTSA service error started a 5-0 Tiger run to give them a 13-10 lead.
Both teams traded points, seeing an 18-18 score after Tate laid down another kill. The Roadrunners would get seven of the final nine points of the set to take the 25-20 win.
Set three started the same as the previous two; a close score plagued Memphis as they took a 15-12 lead into the media timeout following back-to-back kills from Toelke and Tate. The Tigers strung together a 5-2 run that included kills from Jones and Clara Bednarek to pull away from UTSA.
With the Tigers up 24-23, a block from Bednarek and Tate secured the set three win for Memphis to put them up 2-1 in the match.
After Memphis went up 5-3 early in the fourth set, UTSA put together a 9-2 run to take the 12-7 lead.
The Tigers answered right back with a run of their own going on the attack with three kills from Jones and blocks from Jones, Bednarek and Heatherly to take the 14-13 advantage. Memphis took control of the set from there, ending with a 25-20 win after another block from Bednarek and Jones.
Hannah Jones led the team with 15 kills while Tiffany Snook added in 12 kills with a .476 hitting percentage. Jasmyn Tate was the final Tiger to record double-digit kills with 10.
Jordan Heatherly was everywhere tonight with 38 assists while Tabytha Toelke and Courtney Nix both picked up 21 digs – a career high for Nix. Abigail Schlueter also picked up double-digit digs with 14 while adding in a service ace.
The Tigers are back in action on Friday, Nov. 15 when they travel to Houston to take on Rice. First serve is set for 6 p.m. with coverage available on ESPN+.
