No. 19 Tigers Look to Defend AAC Championship
Nov 03, 2024 | Women's Soccer
LAKEWOOD RANCH, Fla. – The regular season champion and 19th-ranked Memphis women's soccer team will begin their quest for a fourth consecutive American Athletic Conference Championship on Monday, taking on Tulsa in the quarterfinals at 6:30 p.m. CT.
Monday's face-off with the Golden Hurricanes will be a direct rematch from last Thursday's match, a 1-1 draw that benefited both sides. Memphis was able to secure the outright regular season title, and Tulsa's added point put them ahead of UTSA for the final seed in the eight-team, single-elimination tournament.
A member of the American Athletic Conference since its inception in 2013, Memphis won its third consecutive AAC conference tournament and its fourth overall in 2023, passing South Florida for the most by any team. They also have five tournament titles from their Conference-USA days, winning five in a row from 2007 to 2011.
Totaling 11 points in 10 conference games this season, Tulsa got hot as the season progressed, taking eight points in their final six matches including taking a point each against the top-two teams in Memphis and South Florida.
With the draw on Thursday, the Memphis-Tulsa all-time record is 14-2-4 in favor of the Tigers. Tulsa is coached by Jim Rhein, in his fourth year leading the program after eight years as associate head coach. They rank second in the conference in goals scored (37) thanks to a three-headed attack: Blaine Schutte (nine goals, two assists), Leah Diaz (seven goals, six assists) and Hannah Chance (six goals, five assists).
The winner of this game will take on the winner of fourth-seeded Rice and fifth-seeded UAB on Thursday, Nov. 6.
