Nakao’s Second Half Strike Gives #16 Tigers 1-0 Win
Sep 07, 2023 | Women's Soccer
MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Memphis Tiger women's soccer team snuck away with a win tonight taking the 1-0 victory over the Wildcats of Kansas State.
After today's game, Memphis moves to 5-1 for the season.
"Winning is not easy so I'm happy to get the result on the road," said head coach Brooks Monaghan. "Despite not being able to finish on the offensive end, we played some of the better soccer that we've seen all year. Unfortunately, our finishing wasn't where it needed to be but, ultimately, I'm proud of a lot of the things we did tonight. We'll take this win and move on to the next one."

KEY MOMENTS
- Memphis dominated on the offensive end tonight, firing off 15 shots in the first half and creating multiple opportunities. Anne-Valerie Seto, Grace Stordy and Anna Hauer all put shots on-goal in the opening 45 minutes but would not be able to connect with the back of the net.
- While the offense struggled, the Tiger defense held the Wildcats to just three shots the entire match with two of them being on-goal.
- The offensive struggles continued in the second half with Seto, Momo Nakao and Saorla Miller all getting shots blocked in the box while Mya Jones fired one off in the 72' that would go off the left post.
- It would be Nakao who put Memphis on the board in the 65' after Ashley Henderson found the feet of Nakao deep in the box.
- Nakao's goal would prove to be enough after the Memphis defense held off Kansas State in the final seconds to take the 1-0 win.
