MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Memphis Tiger women's soccer team continues to roll through its season, playing host to SMU this Thursday night.
Memphis (8-1, 2-0 AAC) comes into the match on a five-game win streak that was extended when they earned a 1-0 win over UTSA last week after Saorla Miller netted the game-winning goal in the 43' of play.
"We've started with two very tough contests and credit to both teams for making it difficult on us. But at the end of the day, I'm proud of our girl's finding a way to win," said head coach Brooks Monaghan.
The Tigers, who currently lead the AAC in corner kicks per game, goals-against average, save percentage and goal differential, are led behind Miller's eight goals while Mya Jones has recorded three goals and seven assists this season. Along with Jones and Miller, seven other players have recorded multiple goals this year while the team is outscoring their opponents 26-4.
In goal, Kaylie Bierman has been the Tiger's go-to making seven appearances this season while picking up six wins. Bierman has made 16 saves and currently boasts a 0.48 goals-against average.
"SMU is a very good team," said Monaghan. "We've had some inconsistencies and need to be sharp and play our game. This is a really big game for us, and I know the team and the staff are really looking forward to it."
SMU (5-2-1, 1-0-1 AAC) comes into Thursday night's game off their first draw of the season after a 0-0 tie with Tulsa. The Mustangs would get four good looks on-goal while SMU goalkeeper, Tatum Sutherland, made four stops in 90 minutes of work.
For the season, Nyah Rose leads the team with seven goals while Eliana Salama has chipped in two goals and three assists for the Mustangs. Between the pipes, Samantha Estrada has been SMU's go-to with right around 555 minutes of work this season.
Last season when the Tigers and Mustangs met, Memphis would walk away with the win and their second consecutive American Athletic Conference Championship.
After 90 minutes of scoreless play, Momo Nakao would find Shae Taylor open deep in the box where she would send it to the back of the new in the 99'. Memphis would fend off three shots from the Mustangs in the second overtime to take the 1-0 win and reclaim its championship title.
