MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Memphis Tiger men's soccer team will hit the road this week with matchups at Lipscomb on Monday evening and in Dallas at SMU on Friday night.
"We have a very challenging week ahead of us with away trips to Lipscomb and SMU," said head men's soccer coach Richard Mulrooney. "Both programs are doing well, and we are going to have to be at the top of our game to be able to get results. I'm excited about the opportunities this week for the guys, and we will prepare accordingly."
Memphis (4-0-1) is off to their best start to a season since 2011 after they claimed a 2-1 win over Belmont on Friday night. After the Bruins would score an own goal to tie the match at 1-1 in the 20', Lineker Rodrigues dos Santos would net his fifth goal of the season off a pass from Eric Primo to put Memphis up 2-1. That score would hold for the rest of the game and the Tigers would remain undefeated this season.
JD Gunn would get his first start of the season over Belmont, going the full 90 minutes while making six saves and picking up the win.
For the season, Rodrigues dos Santos ranks first in the AAC and 7th in the country with five goals this season while also ranking first in both in game-winning goals with three. While Gunn got the start against the Bruins on Friday night, Colin Welsh has been the go-to for Memphis in goal this season. Welsh, who has made nine saves in 350 minutes of play, ranks first in the AAC in save percentage (0.818) and goals-against average (0.515).
Lipscomb (1-2-1) is coming off a 3-2 loss to #19 Kentucky. After the Bison took a 2-0 lead going into halftime, the Wildcats would make a statement in the second half – scoring three unanswered goals in 20 minutes to take the victory.
For the season, Malachi Jones and Tyrece Spicer lead the team with three and four goals, respectively, while Jones and Ploutarchos Alonefti have eight of the team's 11 assists this season. In goal, Juan Carlos Rodriguez has played all 360 minutes for Lipscomb this season with 12 saves made.
Last season when the Tigers and Bison met, the Tigers got a goal from Alberto Cruz in the final 30 seconds of the match to take a 1-1 draw with then #12 Lipscomb.
#22 SMU (4-1) is coming off back-to-back wins over #25 Oral Roberts and Saint Louis last week where they also picked up shutouts. For the season, Jelldrik Dallmann and Jose Ortiz lead the team with a combined six goals while Cole Johnson has made 13 saves with three shutouts in 450 minutes played in goal.
Both games on Tuesday and Friday nights can be streamed on ESPN+. Kick-off for both matches is scheduled for 7 p.m.
