Aug 31, 2023 | Football
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Former Memphis Tigers kicker and three-time Super Bowl champion Stephen Gostkowski will be the inaugural "Release the Tigers" honoree at Saturday's Memphis Football season opener against Bethune-Cookman.
Beginning with Saturday's game, Memphis Athletics will designate an honoree to send the team onto the field at each home game as part of the new team runout, presented by Dillard Door & Entrance Control. Saturday's kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium, and tickets are available at THIS LINK or via phone at (901) 678-2331 starting at $20.
Fans are encouraged to be in their seats no later than 10 minutes before kickoff to make sure they see the new intro video and the Release the Tigers honoree as Memphis takes the field.
"We know fans will very much enjoy this new tradition as part of Memphis Football gamedays," University of Memphis Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Laird Veatch said. "Traditions like these are what makes college athletics so special, and having a Tiger legend like Stephen back in front of our fans will be a great way to start the season. This is another great example of how we are continuing to innovate and improve the fan experience at our games."
Gostkowski played for the Tigers from 2002-05, cementing himself as one of the finest players in program history. For his career, he made 70-of-92 field goals along with 159-of-165 extra points for 369 points, which were all school records at the time. At Memphis, Gostkowski was a two-time First-Team All-Conference USA selection and was named the league's Special Teams Player of the Year in 2005.
Gostkowski was drafted by the New England Patriots in the fourth round of the 2006 NFL Draft with the 118th overall pick. Over his 15-year professional career, he was a three-time Super Bowl champion, three-time All-Pro selection, four-time Pro Bowl honoree and a five-time NFL scoring leader. He was also selected as a member of the NFL 2010s All-Decade Team and holds two NFL records – most consecutive extra points made (523) and most seasons leading the league in points scored.
