Tigers Battle Tough Against Dominican National Team
Aug 03, 2023 | Men's Basketball
SANTO DOMINGO, DR. – Memphis men's basketball put six players in double figures Tuesday night, but was unable to pull off the comeback in a 91-84 defeat against a Dominican Republic National Team full of professionals in front of a lively packed house inside Palacio de los Deportes Virgilio Travieso Soto.
Caleb Mills led the Tigers with 18 points, a team-high eight rebounds and three assists. His backcourt counterpart Jahvon Quinerly added 13 points and a game-high seven dimes.
Jaykwon Walton scored 11 points, while Nick Jourdain, Carl Cherenfant and Jordan Brown each chipped in 10.
A team that has had just one practice as a unit, it took some time for Memphis to settle in.
The Tigers trailed 48-34 at the half and found themselves down by as many as 23 at one point in the third quarter, but behind Mills' 12 second-half points, Memphis shot 53 percent and made it a one-possession game in the final two minutes. The Tigers outscored the DRNT 50-43 in the final 20 minutes.
Memphis finished 35-of-73 from the floor (47.9 percent) and nailed six triples. Former Tiger and current Golden State Warrior Lester Quinones dropped 30 points for the Dominican National Team to lead all players. He was aided by a 6-of-9 night from long range.
The Tigers continue their tour against a Dominican Republic Select Team on Friday. Tip is slated for 5 p.m. CT.
