Tigers Complete Series Sweep of South Florida, Win Fifth-Straight

May 07, 2023 | Baseball

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis baseball team won its fifth-straight game and completed the series sweep of South Florida on Sunday afternoon, defeating the Bulls 8-6 with a 13-hit offensive output at FedExPark Avron Fogelman Field. The sweep marked the first for the Tigers in a conference series since May 4-5, 2013, when the Tigers were members of Conference USA.

With the victory, the Tigers improved to 26-22 (8-10 AAC) on the season and tied the longest winning streak of the year with five-straight wins. The Bulls slipped to 18-31 (6-12) on the year with the loss.

"To get the sweep was huge for us," head coach Kerrick Jackson said. "Now every win in the conference counts, specifically when you're working towards getting a good seed in the conference tournament. I'm proud of our guys for what they did this weekend. We played hard all three games."

HOW IT HAPPENED
Logan Kohler gave the Tigers a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first when he hit his second home run in as many days over the right-field wall to drive in Austin Baskin.
• USF scratched back for a run in the top of the second to cut Memphis' lead to a run.
• Catcher Brennan DuBose jacked a solo shot into the visitor's bullpen in left field in the bottom of the second to extend the Memphis lead to 3-1.
RJ Jimerson recorded a sac-fly in the fourth inning that scored DuBose to make it a 4-1 game.
• Baskin singled back up the middle in the bottom of the fifth for his third hit of the game, driving in Jake Curtis. Baskin would come around to score on an RBI ground out by Will Spears that made the score 6-1.
• The Bulls cut back into the Memphis lead in the top of the sixth, scoring a pair of runs to get within three of the Tigers.
• Baskin made it a 4-for-4 game at the plate when he crushed a no-doubt solo home run over the left-field wall to lead off the bottom of the seventh inning.
• USF got a pair of runs on back-to-back solo shots in the eighth inning, making the score 7-5.
Cameron Benson led off the bottom of the eighth with a lead-off double for his third hit of the game and came around to score on a Brayland Skinner ground out.
• The Bulls struck for one more run on a solo shot in the ninth, but Curtis, who moved from shortstop to the mound, closed the door for an 8-6 Tiger win.
