Tigers Sweep Cincinnati in AAC Championship Opener

ORLANDO – The sixth-seeded Memphis Tiger women's tennis team rolled to a 4-0 sweep over 11th-seeded Cincinnati in the first round of the 2023 American Athletic Conference Championship Wednesday morning at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida.
Memphis (9-12) advances to Thursday's quarterfinal against No. 3 South Florida. The Tigers and Bulls will take the court at 11 a.m.
"The girls played well today. The energy was great, and everyone played hard for each other," head coach Hayden Perez said. "We are looking forward to competing again tomorrow and the challenge will be to match the energy we had today."
For the third time in its last five outings, Memphis grabbed the early advantage with the doubles point after earning victories on courts one and two.
Camila Soares and Monique Woog cruised at the second position, winning 6-1, to get Memphis some early momentum. Top tandem of Aran Teixido Garcia and Emily Meyer then followed with a 6-4 decision to send the Tigers into singles action with a 1-0 advantage.
It was the fifth-straight win by Teixido and Meyer at No. 1 doubles and their ninth victory in the last 11 matches.
Camila Soares won 6-3, 6-0 on singles court one to put the Tigers ahead 2-0, before Aran Teixido Garcia took her match 6-3, 6-1 at the second position.
Freshman Micah Pierce clinched the match for the Tigers with a 6-2, 6-2 victory on the fifth court.
Monique Woog (6-2, 4-3) and Emily Meyer (7-6(5), 2-0) were also ahead in their respective duals on courts three and four when the match was called.
With a win Thursday against USF, the Tigers would advance to the semifinals set for Friday at 3 p.m.
