Sixth-Seeded Tigers Begin AAC Title Defense Wednesday Morning

MEMPHIS – The reigning American Athletic Conference champion Memphis women's tennis team is back in Florida this week to begin its title defense at the USTA National Campus in Orlando for the 2023 AAC Championships.

The No. 6-seeded Memphis is slated to take on No. 11 Cincinnati at 8 a.m. CT Wednesday. The winner of the match will advance to face No. 3 South Florida at 11 a.m. Thursday.

The Tigers enter the championship 8-12 overall and 4-1 against AAC opponents.

After starting the season 1-9, where they faced eight teams ranked inside the top-70, Memphis got hot and closed the year 7-3 in the final month of regular season play.

The doubles tandem of senior Aran Teixidó Garcia and sophomore Emily Meyer have won eight of their last 10 matches, all coming at the top position. Meyer has also posted a team-best nine singles victories this dual match season.

Monique Woog and Teixidó Garcia have each posted seven wins in singles for the next-best mark on the team.

Memphis embarks on its ninth AAC Championship under the direction of head coach Hayden Perez. The Tigers captured the program's first AAC crown in 2022 as the fourth seed, defeating No. 5 Tulane (4-3), No. 9 USF (4-0) and No. 3 and host Tulsa (4-1) along the way. The Tigers finished 20-7, their most victories since 1987, and advanced to their first NCAA Tournament since 2013.

Cincinnati brings an 8-13 overall record into the postseason and an 0-4 mark against league foes. Doubles pairing of Cassie McLay and Callie Flanagan have posted seven victories at the No. 1 position, while Kelli Niehaus and Katie Ferguson have each compiled a team-best nine singles wins.
