Tigers Sign Transfer Caleb Mills
Apr 13, 2023 | Men's Basketball
MEMPHIS – Memphis men's basketball head coach Penny Hardaway announced Thursday the signing of graduate transfer Caleb Mills to the squad for the 2023-24 season.
Mills comes to Memphis with one year of eligibility after spending the previous two seasons at Florida State under Leonard Hamilton. Prior to arriving in Tallahassee, he spent the first three seasons of his collegiate career in the American Athletic Conference with the Houston Cougars.
"Caleb immediately comes in and brings a ton of experience playing at the highest levels the last four years," said Hardaway. "The thing that separates Caleb is his competitive drive, his desire to win and his versatility on both sides of the ball.
"Caleb is a proven scorer at all three levels, can play both on and off the ball, is an excellent decision-maker and possesses an extremely-high basketball IQ. We are excited to welcome Caleb Mills to the Memphis Tigers Family."
The 6-foot-5 guard is currently rated the 32nd-best player in the transfer portal by CBS Sports.
Mills averaged 13.0 points and 3.0 rebounds per game last season with the Seminoles and led the team with 3.4 assists a game and 43 steals. He was a 41.0-percent shooter from the floor and drained 83.6 percent from the free throw line.
He finished his two-year career at FSU as the Seminoles' all-time leader in career free throw percentage with an 84.2-percent clip (171-203).
In 2021-22, Mills led Florida State in scoring (12.7) and earned All-AAC second team honors. In his career as a Seminole, he started 54-of-58 games and totaled 745 points (12.8), 158 rebounds (2.7), 173 assists (3.0) and 82 steals (1.4).
A product of Arden, North Carolina, Mills began his career as an early enrollee at Houston and redshirted in 2018-19. The next season he went on to earn All-AAC second team after leading the team in scoring with 13.2 points, while also pulling down 3.2 boards across 31 games.
He then landed preseason AAC Player of the Year honors in 2020-21, but injuries limited him to just four games on the court before deciding to transfer to FSU.
For his career, Mills has accumulated 1,193 career points and a 12.8 points per game scoring average in 93 games. He has shot 40.9 percent overall (413-1,011) and 33.8 percent from deep (111-328), while converting 82.1 percent at the charity stripe (256-312).
