Davis, Williams Land All-AAC First Team Honors
Mar 08, 2023 | Men's Basketball
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – A pair of Memphis Tigers, Kendric Davis and DeAndre Williams have picked up end-of-season honors from the American Athletic Conference, announced by the league office Wednesday.
The pair earned All-AAC First Team honors, making it the first time in conference history that Memphis has placed two players on the top team.
Davis, one of only two unanimous selections, landed on the first team for the third-consecutive season, while Williams makes his debut after bringing home a second-team nod last season.
Davis led the conference in scoring and assists this regular season at 21.5 points and 5.6 assists per game. Those totals rank 10th and 17th in the country, respectively, putting him as the only player in Division I to rank inside the top 20 of both categories.
He also ranks third in the nation in free throws made (199) and 23rd in steals per game (2.13).
On the season, Davis has recorded three double-doubles and been named the AAC Player of the Week a league record six times. He has also scored double figures 29 times this season, topping the 20-point mark on 20 occasions.
The honor comes just one day after he was named a third team All-American by Sporting News.
Williams is on the all-conference first team at the end of the year after being picked to the squad in the preseason.
He is the top rebounder on the Tigers at 7.6 per game (4th AAC) and ranks second in scoring behind a 17.0-point clip (6th AAC). He is the only player in the conference to rank inside the top 10 in both categories.
The fifth-year forward is also shooting 53.4 percent from the field, 37.5 percent from three-point range and 73.5 percent from the charity stripe. He has six games with three or more steals, nine games with at least five assists and his eight double-doubles are third most in the AAC.
Williams started all 31 games and recorded double figures in 28 of them, including eight with 20-plus points. He had reached double digits in 26-straight games prior to Sunday's eight-point outing.
The Houston, Texas native was named the AAC Player of the Week three times and landed on the Honor Roll four times.
The Tigers (23-8, 13-5 AAC) are seeded second in the 2023 American Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Championship and will take the court at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas, Friday at 6 p.m. CT on ESPNU.
By virtue of earning a first-round bye, the Tigers will start in the quarterfinals against the winner of Thursday's first-round matchup between seventh-seeded UCF and 10th-seeded SMU. With a win Friday, the Tigers would play in the semifinals Saturday at 4 p.m. on ESPN2, and the championship game is Sunday at 2:15 p.m. on ESPN.
