Davis Named Sporting News All-American
Mar 07, 2023 | Men's Basketball
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis' Kendric Davis has been named to the Sporting News All-America Third Team, the publication announced Tuesday. Davis becomes the fourth player in program history named to a Sporting News All-America team.
Davis joins Chris Douglas-Roberts (2008), Penny Hardaway (1993) and Keith Lee (1983 & 1985) as Sporting News All-Americans.
The six-foot point guard is the first Tiger to earn All-America honors of any kind since Will Barton in 2012 when he brought home third team honors from CBSSports.com.
The Sporting News All-America teams are among four the NCAA uses to determine consensus All-Americans, along with Associated Press, USBWA and NABC.
A Houston, Texas native, Davis leads the American Athletic Conference in scoring (21.2/game) and assists (5.6/game), ranks second in steals (2.13/game), third in minutes played (34.7/game) and fourth in free throw percentage (85.0).
Davis is the only player in the country averaging at least 21 points and 5.5 assists per game this season.
Additionally, he has scored in double figures 29 times this season, topping the 20-point mark 20 times. He recorded three double-doubles and flirted with a triple-double on a handful of occasions.
The fifth-year transfer helped the Tigers to 23 regular-season victories, their most since the 2013-14 season, and the program's highest AAC finish (2nd) in conference history.
Davis and the No. 2 seed Tigers open play at the AAC Championship with Friday's quarterfinal matchup at 6 p.m. CT on ESPNU. They will face the winner of No. 7 UCF and No. 10 SMU, who plays in the first round Thursday.
