Tigers Open American Athletic Conference Championship Play Tuesday Night
Mar 06, 2023 | Women's Basketball
FORT WORTH, Texas – The Memphis Tiger women's basketball team will begin play at the 2023 American Athletic Conference Championship on Tuesday night when they take on the winner of Tulsa/UCF.
Memphis (19-9, 11-3 AAC) comes in as the 2-seed in the bracket, the highest finish in the AAC in program history, after the Tigers ended the regular season on an historic seven-game win streak. They closed out conference play with a 55-44 win over Tulane last Wednesday where Jamirah Shutes and Madison Griggs led the team with a combined 27 points.
Along with Shutes (All-AAC Second Team) and Griggs (All-AAC Third Team), rookie Destiny Thomas would find her name along with postseason awards as she claimed a spot on the All-AAC Freshman Team. She would close out the last seven games leading the Tigers with just over seven rebounds per game with more than half coming on the offensive end.
Hannah Riddick and Emani Jefferson have been forces on the defensive end for Memphis this season; Riddick currently leads the team with 180 total rebounds while Jefferson has recorded 14 on-ball charges and picked up a team-high 37 steals this year.
The Tigers will take on the winner of Tulsa-UCF, who plays in the opening round of the tournament tonight.
Memphis picked up wins over the Golden Hurricane and Knights during their undefeated February.
It would take extra time against UCF (13-14, 4-11 AAC) to decide a winner, but Memphis would come out on top after Jefferson and Griggs scored all seven of the team's overtime points. Despite the rough offensive turnout for the Tigers, the Memphis defense would force the Knights into 27 turnovers and grab 58 rebounds in the 50-48 win.
That would not be the case in Memphis' win at Tulsa (17-12, 7-9 AAC) just a few weeks later; the Tigers would get a 29-point third quarter to take a 23-point lead heading into the final 10 minutes of play. Along with their offense exploding, the Tiger defense held Tulsa to just 15 second-half points to cruise to the 69-44 win.
Tuesday's quarterfinal game is scheduled to tip-off at 6 p.m. CT inside Dickies Arena. Coverage of the game can be found on ESPN+ and on 98.9 FM The Roar of Memphis with Tyler Springs on the call.
