Tigers Host Alabama State, Travel to No. 12 Tennessee

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis women's basketball team will play in its home opener this Thursday when it hosts Alabama State before jetting off to take on the 12th ranked Lady Vols of Tennessee on Monday evening.
Thursday's game against Alabama State is scheduled for a 7 p.m. tip-off with coverage available on ESPN+ while Monday's match-up at Tennessee will start at 5:30 p.m. CT and air on SECN+.
Memphis (0-1) is coming off a tough season-opener at Middle Tennessee on Monday night where the Tigers struggled offensively while early fouls proved costly. Memphis would suffer the 67-47 loss behind 12 points from Madison Griggs and eight apiece from Alasia Smith, Kai Carter and Destyne Jackson.
Smith, along with Shelbee Brown, led the Tigers on the boards with nine and seven rebounds, respectively, while Smith, Carter and Aliyah Green were all credited with blocks.
Alabama State (0-1) opened its season on Monday night in Tuscaloosa against the Crimson Tide of Alabama. The Hornets would get 13 points and two blocks from Shmya Ward but would suffer the 93-39 loss.
Thursday's game will be just the second meeting all-time between the Tigers and Hornets; Memphis claimed a 116-32 win over Alabama State back in the 1995-96 season in the Bluff City.
Tennessee (1-0) opened its 2023-24 season on Tuesday night against Florida A&M with a 93-64 win. Jewel Spear and Karoline Striplin led the way, offensively, with 20 points, each, while Jillian Hollingshead pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds.
Memphis and Tennessee have a long history with each other, dating back to the 1978-79 season where the Tigers earned a 79-75 win. The Lady Volunteers have taken the last 19 matchups with the most recent game being more than two decades ago.
