No. 8 Tigers Meet SMU in American Athletic Conference Championship Match
Nov 04, 2023 | Women's Soccer
LAKEWOOD RANCH, Fla. – The University of Memphis Tiger women's soccer team will play in its third consecutive American Athletic Conference Championship match Sunday afternoon when it takes on SMU. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. CT with coverage available on ESPNU.
"We're going to have to play one of our better matches in order to give ourselves a chance to win," head coach Brooks Monaghan said. "When we played them last year in the Championship and earlier this season it was a tight match. I told the team that this match is about the fine details and the grind of who wants it more."
Memphis (17-1), the reigning back-to-back AAC Champions, comes into Sunday on a 14-match winning streak after taking down UAB and Charlotte in the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds earlier this week. Anne-Valerie Seto, Saorla Miller, Anna Hauer and Mya Jones have all found the back of the net during the championship, while Kaylie Bierman has recorded seven saves over the two-game span.
For the season, the Tigers have dominated on the pitch, ranking top-10 in the country in goals against average (1st – 0.33), shutout percentage (1st – 0.722), save percentage (2nd - 0.895) and goal differential (6th - 40). Both Bierman and Jones are ranked top-15 nationally in goals against average and assists per game, respectively.
SMU (11-5-1) has won its last four matches, including a 3-0 decision over Florida Atlantic in the AAC semifinals. The Mustangs held the Owls to just seven shots while getting back-to-back goals from Wayny Balata in the 3' and 9'.
Earlier this season when the Tigers and Mustangs met, Memphis came away with the 2-1 win after getting two goals from Jones in the 11' and 14'. SMU was the only AAC team to score against the Memphis defense in the regular season.
Sunday's match comes as a rematch of last season's AAC Championship; the Tigers and Mustangs would play a scoreless 90 minutes to send it to overtime. In the 99' Momo Nakao flicked a pass into the box that Shae Taylor kneed in for the 1-0 lead. SMU would only get one shot attempt in the 105' that Claire Wyville stopped to give Memphis the 1-0 victory and the AAC Championship trophy.
