MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis men's soccer team will get another match at the Track & Soccer Complex this week when it plays host to the Bulls of South Florida Sunday in the American Athletic Conference Championship Quarterfinals. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. with coverage available on ESPN+.
Memphis (9-4-2, 4-4 AAC) finished the regular season on Wednesday night in Charlotte where it dropped a 1-0 decision to the 49ers. After a scoreless first half, Charlotte broke the tie with a goal from Jonathan Nyandjo in the 77'. The Tigers got looks from Gabriel Christensen, Giorgos Kondylis and Lineker Rodrigues dos Santos, but weren't able to find the back of the net.
JD Gunn recorded his seventh start between the pipes this season, making four saves in the match. The graduate student has now recorded 30 saves in just over 640 minutes of work in route to a 6-1 record.
"I think the team is in a good mindset for the match," head coach Richard Mulrooney said. "Making the tournament is never a guarantee and to able to host at our home field is a huge plus – especially since it's the first time for us since the 2019 season. We're going up against a very good South Florida team who we just saw a couple of weeks ago and we need to focus on playing a full 90 minutes."
South Florida (6-8-1, 3-4-1 AAC) is coming off a 2-0 win over Florida Atlantic this week where Ajmeer Spengler and Jalen Anderson picked up goals on the 12' and 82', respectively. The Bulls defense held the Owls to just one shot the entire match while firing off 11 shots on-goal in route to their win.
Last week when Memphis and South Florida met, the Tigers got on top early when Eric Primo found the feet of Rodrigues dos Santos deep in the box for the 1-0 lead. After the Bulls tied the match at one a piece, it was Rodrigues dos Santos again in the 82' flicking in his second strike of the night to give Memphis the 2-1 win.
