Tigers Set to Battle Lane College in Sunday Exhibition
Oct 28, 2023 | Men's Basketball
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis men's basketball team will hit the floor for the first time Sunday afternoon at FedExForum, hosting Lane College in an exhibition. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
The defending American Athletic Conference champion Tigers return just two players from a team that went 26-9 and earned a second-straight trip to the NCAA Tournament. Local heroes Malcolm Dandridge and Jayden Hardaway return for their final season in Memphis.
Despite losing 13 players in the offseason, head coach Penny Hardaway reloaded the roster through the transfer portal, prompting most national pundits to believe this is the most talented team in his six seasons, top to bottom.
The Tigers added nine transfers and three true freshmen with former Alabama point guard Jahvon Quinerly headlining the unit.
Also joining him in the Bluff City are the reigning Lou Henson Player of the Year Jordan Brown (Louisiana), Caleb Mills (Florida State), David Jones (St. John's), Jaykwon Walton (Wichita State), Nick Jourdain (Temple) and Jayhlon Young (UCF).
The Tigers were picked to finish second in the AAC Preseason Coaches Poll, while Quinerly was tabbed a preseason first-team selection and Brown was selected to the second team. Freshmen Carl Cherenfant and JJ Taylor were named the league's preseason Co-Rookies of the Year.
After Sunday, the Tigers host LeMoyne-Owen College Thursday, Nov. 2 at 7 p.m. in their final exhibition before the season opener on Monday, Nov. 6 against Jackson State.

GAME NOTES
- Memphis has won 20 games in each of the last six seasons, including all five under head coach Penny Hardaway. Only three Tiger head coaches, now including Hardaway, have won at least 20 games in each of their first five seasons at the helm (Pastner, Calipari).
- Memphis is one of just three programs to win at least 18 games in each of the last 22 seasons starting in 2000-01 (Kansas, Gonzaga).
- Six of the team's nine losses in 2022-23 were by three points or less. All nine were by single digits.
- Memphis returns just 9.7 percent of its total points (271) and 8.0 percent of its total rebounds (101) from last season.
- Quinerly was named to the Bob Cousy Watch List earlier this week as one of the top 20 point guards in the nation. He started 40 games over the past three seasons at Alabama where he averaged 11.7 points, 2.3 rebounds and 3.6 assists for the Crimson Tide.
- Brown was tabbed Friday to the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar watch list as one of the top 20 centers in the country. He won the Lou Henson Award last season for the top mid-major player in Division I, averaging 19.3 points and 8.6 rebounds while grabbing a team-high 10 double-doubles.
- Memphis is one of just two teams in Division I this season to have a head coach with two sons on the roster as Ashton Hardaway joins the team as a true freshman alongside Jayden.
- Boise State is the only other team with head coach Leon Rice and his two sons Kade and Max.
