Coming off an AAC Tournament title, a second-straight NCAA Tournament appearance and a fifth consecutive 20-win season, Memphis head coach Penny Hardaway brought in a top-15 class this season that features point guard and Alabama transfer Jahvon Quinerly, who scored over 1,100 points while winning two SEC regular season championships and two SEC tournament titles in his Crimson Tide career. The Tigers also reeled in the reigning Lou Henson Award winner in 6-foot-11 big man Jordan Brown, who averaged 19.3 points, 8.6 rebounds and grabbed 10 double-doubles for Louisiana en route to being named first team all-conference and the Sun Belt Tournament MVP.
Another addition in the Tiger backcourt this season is Florida State transfer Caleb Mills, who started over 50 games for the Seminoles the last two seasons. In 2022-23, he averaged 13.0 points, 3.0 rebounds, a team-high 3.4 assists and 1.3 steals per game. Hardaway found another scorer in former Wichita State guard Jaykwon Walton, who led the Shockers with 13.9 points and 5.3 rebounds per game last season in 27 starts.
Additionally, Memphis added another big-time player in St. John's transfer David Jones. The 6-foot-6 forward started 17 games for the Red Storm last season, averaging 13.2 points and 6.8 rebounds per game. He logged seven double-doubles, rattled off double digits in 25 games and drained a team-high 42 triples.
