
NOTES: Memphis Hosts Temple on Saturday

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis will continue a four-game homestand on Saturday, Oct. 1 against American Athletic Conference (AAC) rival Temple at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium at 11 a.m. The game will be broadcast nationally on ESPNU.

SETTING THE SCENE
• Memphis is looking for a 2-0 start in AAC play for the first time since 2016.
• The Tigers scored twice defensively to take down North Texas, 44-34, last Saturday, as both linebacker Xavier "Zay" Cullens and defensive lineman Jaylon Allen returned interceptions for touchdowns.
• The Tigers have forced at least one turnover in nine-straight games, piling up 21 takeaways over that span.
• Memphis posted a record of 6-6 last season, earning the program's eighth-straight bowl appearance.
• The Tigers were named the EasyPost Hawai'i Bowl Champions after Hawai'i was unable to participate.
• The eight-consecutive bowls streak is tied for the eighth-best in the nation and is the best among all non-Power 5 programs.
SCOUTING TEMPLE
• Temple comes to Memphis with an overall record of 2-2 on the season under first-year head coach Stan Drayton. Last Saturday, the Owls shut-out UMass, 28-0, to earn the victory. Temple's other victory came against Lafayette, 30-14, on Sept. 10.
• Temple ranks first in the NCAA in red zone offense (1.000), third in team sacks, fifth in passing yards allowed (137.5), eighth in red zone defense (.615), 14th in sacks allowed (0.75) and 18th in scoring defense (15.0).
• Prior to the season, Temple was picked to finish 11th in AAC by the media.
• Last year, the Owls posted an overall record of 3-9 on the season and a mark of 1-7 in league play.

• The meeting between Memphis and Temple on Saturday will mark the eighth all-time game between the two programs dating back to 2013.
• The Owls hold a record of 4-3 against the Tigers in the all-time series, but Memphis has won two of the three contests at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium, including two straight.

• One of the best players in the history of University of Memphis Football, Danton Barto's jersey (No. 59) will be retired in a ceremony at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium at a future game determined with the family.
• A 2007 M-Club. Hall of Fame inductee, Barto remains the school record holder for career solo tackles (273) and career total tackles (473) and ranks second all-time with 200 assisted career tackles. Barto passed away in August of 2021 at the age of 50.
• Barto will join a prestigious group of former Tigers to have their jersey retired: John Bramlett (No. 64), Isaac Bruce (83), Dave Casinelli (30), Charles Greenhill (8), Harry Schuh (79) and DeAngelo Williams (20).
DEFENSIVE SCORES LEAD MEMPHIS PAST NORTH TEXAS, 44-34
• The Tigers scored twice defensively to take down the Mean Green, 44-34, on Sept. 24 in Memphis, as both linebacker Xavier "Zay" Cullens and defensive lineman Jaylon Allen returned interceptions for touchdowns. Cullens ended the game with eight tackles, an interception, a fumble recovery and a tackle for loss. Allen had two tackles and a sack to go with his pick.
• Offensively, quarterback Seth Henigan completed 19-of-29 passes for 141 yards, two touchdowns and his first interception of the season. The sophomore also rushed 10 times for 54 yards.
• Memphis' defense limited the high-powered North Texas to just 102 yards rushing for the game, 116.5 fewer than the Mean Green averaged entering the contest.
