MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis football team defeated North Texas, 44-34, on Saturday afternoon at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium in Memphis, Tenn.
The Tigers (3-1, 1-0 American Athletic Conference) scored twice defensively to take down the Mean Green (2-3, 1-0 Conference USA), as both linebacker Xavier "Zay" Cullens and defensive lineman Jaylon Allen returned interceptions for touchdowns. Cullens ended the game with eight tackles, an interception, a fumble recovery and a tackle for loss. Allen had two tackles and a sack to go with his pick.
Offensively, quarterback Seth Henigan completed 19-of-29 passes for 141 yards, two touchdowns and his first interception of the season. The sophomore also rushed 10 times for 54 yards.
Tight end Caden Prieskorn had his fourth touchdown in three games for the Tigers, while wide receiver Javon Ivory reeled in an 18-yard score from Henigan. Running back Brandon Thomas rushed 15 times for a game-high 84 yards and two touchdowns.
Memphis' defense limited the high-powered North Texas to just 102 yards rushing for the game, 116.5 fewer than the Mean Green averaged entering the contest. The Tigers' three forced turnovers extended the team's streak of having at least one takeaway to nine-straight games. The team has forced 21 turnovers of that stretch.
