Sep 16, 2022 | Men's Soccer
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – After picking up their first home win of the season against a then undefeated Green Bay, the Tigers will kick off American Athletic Conference play against SMU this Saturday night.
"Green Bay is good – they are a solid team, and you can see why they hadn't lost," said head men's soccer coach Richard Mulrooney. "They are a high energy, pressuring team and they pushed us to our limits and the guys found a way to win."
Memphis (2-1-1) who handed the Phoenix their first loss of the season, got their lone goal in the 81' when Jovan Prado netted a penalty kick. The Tigers were able to hold Green Bay scoreless after Cam Weston blocked two shots and Colin Welsh made two saves in the match.
For the season, six different players have scored goals for the Tigers while outscoring their opponents 7-2. Memphis currently ranks 6thin the country and 1st in the AAC in shot accuracy.
(RV) SMU (4-1-1) had their three-game win streak broken on Tuesday night when they came up with a draw against No. 23 UNC-Greensboro. The Mustangs would hold the nation's top scoring offense to just seven shots the entire match while Cole Johnson made one save for his third shutout of the season.
The Tigers saw great success over SMU last season; in their first match-up with the Mustangs, Memphis came away with the 3-2 OT win when Artur de Luca netted a penalty kick in the 98' to send then 10th ranked SMU packing. Memphis would sweep their matchup with SMU later in the season when they took the 4-1 win in Dallas.
"We have a long history with SMU being a tough opponent. They are always a solid team and are very well coached and we need to make sure we do what we need to do in order to get the best result possible," said Mulrooney.
Saturday's match at the Track & Soccer Complex is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start time. Coverage of the game can be found on ESPN+ and on GoTigersGo.com.
