MEMPHIS, Tenn. – After taking down Iowa State and UAB last week, the Tigers, who come in ranked No. 23 in the United Soccer Coaches Poll, will face a big challenge when they take on ACC opponents Louisville and No. 5 Virginia this Thursday and Sunday.
"It's still early in the season and we still have a lot to work on but overall, I was very pleased with how we played against Iowa State," said head women's soccer coach Brooks Monaghan. "For UAB, we played like ourselves for the first 60 minutes but the last 30 minutes we did not play our normal style and that gave them momentum towards the end of the match. But, we're moving forward and looking ahead to this weekend."
Despite the close call with UAB, Memphis still came away with the 2-1 victory after Anne-Valerie Seto and Momo Nakao both scored early in the match.
Louisville (2-1) is coming off a bounce back win over Northern Kentucky after Karsyn Cherry netted the Cardinals lone goal in the 14' of play. Her goal would stand as the game-winning goal as the Louisville defense held NKU to just one shot the entire match.
The Tigers and Cardinals have a long history with one another, dating as far back as the 1995 season. Memphis holds the 6-4-1 record over Louisville but have gone 1-3-1 against the Cardinals in their last five matches.
Virginia (4-0) is coming off their third straight shutout of the season where they downed Fairleigh Dickinson 5-0. The 5th ranked Cavaliers would score four goals in the opening 45 minutes to gain control of the match with Haley Hopkins recording a hat-trick just 13 minutes into the game.
Sunday's match will be the first time in program history that Memphis and Virginia have met.
"This is an exciting weekend for us. This is a great opportunity to play against two teams that come from, arguably, the top conference in the country," said Monaghan. "We're going to have to be our best to be able to compete."
Thursday's match against Louisville will be a neutral site game and take place in Harrisonburg, Va. Kick-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. Sunday's match at Virginia will have coverage on the ACC Network beginning at 5 p.m. Live stats for both games can be found on GoTigersGo.com
