Tigers Beat EWU and Southern on Day 2 of the Tiger Brawl

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis rebounded on the second day of the Tiger Brawl Tournament. After splitting with Nicholls and Central Michigan on Friday, the Tigers defeated EWU in five sets and Southern in four.
The second set saw 13 tied scores and six lead changes with the Tigers eventually pulling away after the media timeout. Memphis went on an 11-4 run following the media timeout.
EWU took the Tigers to their second fifth-set match of the season after winning the third set 25-18 and forth set 25-21.
Memphis and EWU both went on small runs during the fifth set to extend it. Memphis held off two match points attempts from the Eagles, finishing the match on a three-point streak earning the match victory 18-16.
Notables
A block from Miaya Smith to start the second pit the Tigers on a 9-2 run, they lead by as much as 12. Coach Burdette switched around his lineups in second, with transfer Halle Everett and freshmen Chelsea George seeing more play time. Catalina Martinez also saw her first action as a Tiger. An ace by Jasmyn Tate secured the 25-15 set win.
Southern jumped out to an early lead in the first, with a 15-11 advantage at the media timeout. They would win the set 25-15.
Looking to claim their third victory of the tournament Memphis rallied during the fourth set. After going back-and-fourth for a majoriy of the set, the Tigers were able to pull away to a 25-19 set victory and win the match 3-1.

Memphis 3, EWU 2

- Tate had a team high 14 block son a .212 hitting percentage and two aces, one earning Memphis the set point in the second.
- Senior Kate Bass and sophomore junior Autumn Hamilton both had nine kills during the match. Bass added four blocks to her stat line as well.

- Memphis will travel to Fort Wort next weekend to play Texas A&M, Coastal Carolina and TCU on Friday and Saturday. The Tigers will be back in the 901 on Sept. 9 to host the Beale Street Challenge.
