MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Head men's soccer coach Richard Mulrooney and crew will kick-off their 2022 season on Friday night when they take on Queens University of Charlotte in the UAB Soccer for the Cure Classic. They will follow up their opening weekend against College of Charleston on Sunday morning.
"We made the most out of our two weeks for preseason along with our chemistry on the and off the field," said Mulrooney. "Overall, we're excited to get back on the field and partaking in the Classic."
The Tigers, who finished 6-9-2 last season, bring back a hefty number of faces from a year ago, including Toby McCallum, Emmanuel Santos, Gabriel Christensen, Jovan Prado, Lineker Rodrigues dos Santos and Peter Chang, who combined for 11 of the team's 25 goals last season.
Colin Welsh also returns for his sophomore season; he spent just under 930 minutes in goal last season for the Tigers while making 52 saves and ranking him in the top-5 in the American Athletic Conference in goals against average and save percentage while ranking as the top goalkeeper in the AAC in saves per game and total saves.
Queens, who are a new member to NCAA Division I beginning this season, finished with a 7-7-2 mark in 2021 while going 6-3-2 in the South Atlantic Conference.
The Royals bring back their top goal-scorer from last season in Felipe Mendonca, who netted 14 goals while assisting on three. Mendonca ended the 2021 season ranked first in the SAC in total goals while ranking 10th in Division II for his 14 goals.
College of Charleston, who went 5-8-3 and 1-6-1 in the Colonial Athletic Conference, return their top goal-scorer from a year ago. Kane Ritchie led the team with five goals and one assist for 11 points.
This will be the second time in program history that the Tigers and the Cougars have met.
Kick-off for the Tigers match against Queens is set for Friday night at 4 p.m. in Birmingham, Ala. while Sunday's game against College of Charleston will begin at 11:30 a.m. Live stats for both games are available at GoTigersGo.com.
