Apr 23, 2022 | Men's Tennis
TULSA, Okla. – The second-seeded Memphis Tiger men's tennis team advanced to the title match of the 2022 American Athletic Conference Championship with a 4-3 victory over third-seeded and No. 37 Tulsa Saturday afternoon in Tulsa, Okla.
Â
No. 36 Memphis (16-6) will face top-seeded and No. 26 SMU Sunday at noon for the title. The match can be seen on ESPN+.
Â
"Today was another exciting tennis match and a great team win by our team," Memphis head coach Paul Goebel said. "We played a super doubles point, and getting that one proved to be important in our 4-3 victory. David Stevenson played a terrific singles match at number one, and it was so good to see Oscar Cutting clinch the match for the team."
Â
Stevenson's win was over Tulsa's Kody Pearson, who is ranked 49th in the nation. Stevenson now has two wins against ranked opponents on the year. Pablo Alemany Malea moved to 17-0 this season with his 6-3, 6-2 win on singles court four.
Â
"We are already looking forward to tomorrow's finals and know it will be another great battle," Goebel explained.
Â
The Tigers will be looking for their first AAC Championship title in their second all-time title match, as they finished runners-up in 2014.
