Apr 24, 2022 | Men's Tennis
TULSA, Okla. – The second-seeded Memphis Tiger men's tennis team dropped a hard-fought American Athletic Conference Championship title match to top-seeded SMU, 4-2, Sunday afternoon in Tulsa, Okla.
Â
No. 36 Memphis (16-7) was appearing in its second AAC Championship final and first since 2014. No. 26 SMU (22-6) earns the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament with the win.
Â
"Today was a hard-fought conference championship by both teams," Memphis head coach Paul Goebel said. "Our guys came out strong and got the doubles point, but I give SMU a lot of credit for fighting back and making it hard on us on every court. We had a great tournament and hope to play some more at NCAAs."
Â
The Tigers lost the first doubles match but won the next two to take the day's opening point. Patrick Sydow/Pau Fanlo picked up a 6-4 win and Oscar Cutting/Pablo Alemany Malea followed with a 7-6 (7-2) victory to put the Tigers ahead, 1-0.
Â
Memphis' singles day was highlighted by freshman Alemany Malea moving to 18-0 on the season with a 6-2, 1-6, 6-2 win on court four. Four other singles matches went three sets.
Â
Memphis will find out if it has earned an NCAA Tournament bid during the NCAA.com Selection Show on Monday, May 2 at 5 p.m. The first round of the tournament begins Friday, May 6. An NCAA Tournament appearance would be Memphis' second-straight and eighth in the last 10 seasons.
