Third-Seeded Memphis Opens AAC Tournament Friday in Quarterfinals

MEMPHIS, Tenn. ā The Memphis Tigers are seeded third in the 2022 Air Force Reserve American Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Championship and will take the court at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas, Friday at 8 p.m. CT on ESPNU.

By virtue of earning a first-round bye, the Tigers (19-9, 13-5 AAC) will start in the quarterfinals against the winner of Thursday's first-round matchup between sixth-seeded UCF and 11th-seeded South Florida. With a win Friday, the Tigers would play in the semifinals Saturday at 4 p.m. on ESPN2, and the championship game is next Sunday, March 13, at 2:15 p.m. on ESPN.

The Tigers enter postseason play winners of 10 of their last 11 games, including an emphatic 75-61 win over No. 14/14 Houston Sunday morning at FedExForum in the regular season finale. Memphis' 13 AAC wins this season are its most since joining the conference prior to the 2013-14 campaign. The Tigers have defeated three ranked teams in the same season for the first time since 2013-14, which was also the last time the Tigers advanced to the NCAA Tournament.

Freshman Jalen Duren led the Tigers in scoring and rebounding in the regular season, averaging 11.9 points and 7.5 rebounds per game. He started all 24 games he played and averaged 25.3 minutes per outing. DeAndre Williams was just behind Duren in both categories, averaging 11.0 points and 5.6 boards per game, and Emoni Bates and Landers Nolley II were also in double figures in the regular season at 10.4 and 10.2 points per game, respectively.

As a team this regular season, the Tigers led the AAC in scoring (76.1), field goal percentage (.473), blocked shots per game (5.8) and steals per game (8.8) and were second in seven other statistical categories.

After the AAC Tournament, NCAA Tournament bids are awarded during the Selection Show next Sunday at 5 p.m. on CBS.
