Tigers Split Challenging Weekend in Iowa

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The 47th-ranked Memphis Tiger women's tennis team split a pair of matches in Iowa this weekend, defeating Iowa on Friday, 5-2, before dropping a 4-2 decision to No. 28 Iowa State Sunday.

Memphis (13-5) won the doubles point in both matches, with the team of Emily Meyer/Monique Woog winning both of their matches.

Against the Hawkeyes, all six singles points were played to completion with the Tigers winning four. Aran Teixido Garcia and Woog won in straight sets, and Alisha Reayer and Meyer dropped their middle sets before completing their point.

The 28th-ranked Cyclones remained undefeated on the season with their 4-2 win Sunday. After the Tigers went ahead 1-0 after doubles play, Iowa State took the first three singles matches. Meyer kept the match alive with a 6-4, 6-3 win on court four, but the Cyclones finished things off on court three.

"We lost a tough one today against Iowa State," Memphis head coach Hayden Perez said. "Iowa State is a tough opponent and proved to be too tough today. We fought hard and represented our great University well. I am very proud of this team."

On the weekend, Meyer went 2-0 in both doubles and singles play.

Memphis is back in action on Sunday, March 27 against UAB and Samford in Birmingham, Ala.

"We have two weeks until we compete again, and this break couldn't come at a better time," Perez explained. "We have played every weekend since the beginning of the season in mid-January. The kids have been absolute warriors and handled being on the road for two months now. This break will do us good, and we will get healthy and attack the rest of our season."
