Mar 11, 2022 | Baseball
Game 1, 10 Innings
Memphis: 12, Samford: 3
WP: Chase Kessinger (1-0)
LP: Alex Goff (1-1)
SV: None
How it happened:
- For the third time in his first four starts, RHP Connor Shamblin (ND) didn't allow a run over at least five innings (5.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 5 K, 2 BB)
- The Tigers took the lead in the second frame against RHP Jacob Cravey (ND) on an RBI groundout by 1B Chris Swanberg
- Memphis doubled the lead in the seventh on a two-out RBI single by CF Zach Wilson
- After five innings from Shamblin, LHP Dalton Kendrick worked scoreless sixth and seventh innings, but two consecutive singles by Samford opened up the eighth
- With runners on first and second and two outs in the eighth, SS Garrett Howe connected with a game-tying two-run double to right field, as the game was level 2-2 entering the ninth
- Memphis left the go-ahead run at third base in the top of the ninth, while the Bulldogs nearly walked-off with the win in the home half of the frame
- Kessinger relieved Kendrick to begin the ninth and gave up a leadoff single to 3B Will David, who then advanced on a sacrifice bunt
- RF Andrew Bennett nearly gave Samford the win with a walk-off single, but SS Ben Brooks knocked the base hit down and kept it on the infield, which held David to third base; Kessinger then struck out 2B Garrett Staton to end the frame
- In the 10th, Memphis sent 16 men to the plate, which included a stretch of 12 straight baserunners with one out
- The Tigers scored 10 runs on five hits and two errors, as both 2B Towns King and Howe committed errors on would be inning-ending double plays, while C Taylor Howell cleared the bases with a three-run double that blew the game open, as Memphis took the opener 12-3
Notables:
- Eight different Tigers had at least one hit, while C Taylor Howell had a game-high three hits and season-high three RBIs
- Howell extended his hitting streak to nine games and recorded his third multi-hit effort over that stretch
- DH Jacob Compton, 3B Logan Kohler, and 1B Chris Swanberg each had two RBIs
Game 2, Suspended, B6
Memphis: 6, Samford: 6
WP: N/A
LP: N/A
SV: N/A
How it happened:
- Memphis took a 1-0 lead in the first on a two-out RBI single by Compton
- The Bulldogs answered immediately, as LHP Dalton Fowler (ND) struggled to throw strikes in his first inning; the southpaw walked five and gave up one hit in a three-run first inning
- Brooks' two-out, two-run single in the second tied the game 3-3
- The Tigers took the lead in the third, as the first three batters of the frame reached safely against LHP Blake Bortak (ND), with a run scoring on a wild pitch and another on a groundout
- Fowler settled in and allowed just one hit and one run over his final 2.2 innings but departed for RHP Blake Wimberley with two runners on and two outs in the fourth
- Wimberley allowed one inherited runner to score and also gave up a run in the fifth inning on an RBI single by DH Kaden Dreier, which tied the game 5-5
- After the Tigers left two runners on in the sixth, the skies opened up as Wimberley retired the first two batters of the bottom of the sixth before David singled up the middle and King got ahead in the count 2-0 before the umpires called for the tarp and suspended the game
Up Next:
- The Tigers and Bulldogs will complete their suspended game Sunday at 1 p.m. before they play the scheduled series finale
- Memphis will remain on the road for a Tuesday matchup at Arkansas State before returning to Memphis to host Southern Illinois-Edwardsville for a three-game series March 18-20
