Tigers Take Down Alabama, Fall to No. 19 Mississippi State

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Memphis Tiger men's tennis team's challenging early-season schedule continued this week, with the Tigers earning a thrilling come-from-behind win at Alabama Saturday and falling at No. 19 Mississippi State Thursday.
The 4-3 win at Alabama gives Memphis (4-2) two Power 5 wins on the season after the squad topped Northwestern on Jan. 21, 4-2. Mississippi State is the second ranked foe to edge the Tigers, joining No. 1 Tennessee on Jan. 29.
The Tigers dropped the doubles point against the Crimson Tide but battled back from the 1-0 deficit, with Pablo Alemany Malea and Harry Rock winning in the fifth and sixth positions, respectively. Alabama's No. 83 Filip Planinsek defeated Memphis' No. 112 Oscar Cutting in the top spot to level the match at 2, and the Tigers fell down 3-2 with a defeat in the second position.
With its back against the wall, Memphis then won the next two points in come-from-behind fashion to take the match. Pau Fanlo defeated Alabama's Juan Martin in the fourth position, 6-7 (11-13), 6-2, 6-3, and David Stevenson gave Memphis the win with a 5-7, 7-6 (8-6), 7-5 triumph in the third spot.
Memphis' No. 30 doubles team of David Stevenson/Jeremy Taylor earned a win for the Tigers against the Bulldogs, and Memphis secured the doubles point when Oscar Cutting/Patrick Sydow picked up a thrilling 7-6 (7-5) victory.
The Tigers return to action on Saturday, Feb. 19 against North Alabama in Memphis.
