Tigers Fast Start Downs Bearcats for Third Consecutive Home Win

MEMPHIS, Tenn.– The Memphis women's basketball team got out to a hot start tonight against the Bearcats of Cincinnati. While the Cincinnati offense got a spark in the second quarter, the Tigers would hold on for the 66-54 win.
Following tonight's win, Memphis moves to 13-6 overall and 4-4 in AAC play.
The Tiger offense jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead just 90 seconds into the game after back-to-back baskets from Jamirah Shutes and a lay-up from Lanetta Williams. Shutes would add in another lay-up after picking up a steal to put Memphis up 9-0 and force a Bearcat timeout.
It wouldn't be until the 4:59 mark when Cincinnati scored their first bucket of the night. The Bearcat offense would go on a 7-0 run to cut into the Tiger's lead, but an and-one at the buzzer from Emani Jefferson gave Memphis the 20-12 lead going in to the second quarter.
Cincinnati's offense exploded in the second quarter, eventually taking the lead with 5:13 left in the half.
Memphis would regain their lead just before halftime when Tyler Frierson got fouled on a lay-up and completed an and-one and gave Memphis the 35-34 lead.
It was all Tiger Basketball in the second half as Memphis held the Cincinnati offense to just 31% shooting from the field.
While Memphis would try to get some space from the Bearcats in the third quarter but would only find themselves up six going into the final 10 minutes of play after a three-pointer from Madison Griggs.
The Tiger defense held strong in the fourth quarter, allowing the Bearcats to score just six points while the Memphis offense finished the game on a 9-0 run to take the 66-54 win.
Emani Jefferson and Jamirah Shutes led the team in scoring tonight with 15 and 14 points, respectively, while Lanetta Williams, Madison Griggs and Tyler Frierson all recorded eight points each. Williams led all players with nine rebounds while the team won the battle on the boards 48-41.
As a team, Memphis shot 34% from the field and went 17-21 from the free throw line.
The Tigers will be back in action this Saturday when they make their way down to Orlando, Fla. to take on the Knights of UCF. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. CT. Coverage of the game can be found on ESPN+ and on News Talk 98.9 The Roar of Memphis with Tyler Springs on the call.
