MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Memphis Tiger men's soccer team will make their way to Florida for the semi-final round of the American Athletic Conference Championship as they take on #1 Florida International on Thursday evening.
Memphis (9-4-4) is coming off a stunning 2-1 overtime win over #12 Tulsa this past Sunday. The Tigers, who picked up their second top-25 win of the season, held off the Golden Hurricane through the second overtime to knock them out of the tournament. Alberto Cruz netted the equalizer goal in the 50' while Lineker Rodrigues dos Santos scored the game-winning goal in the 99' of the match.
For the season, the duo of Cruz and Rodrigues dos Santos has led the team with 16 points apiece while Colin Welsh has held down the fort in goal for the Tigers with a league-high 66 saves.
FIU (11-4-1) claimed the AAC Regular Season after going 6-2-1 in conference play and winning their last four games of the season. Stephen Afrifa has led the team with nine goals and three assists while Kevin Harr has played and started in the last 12 games for the Panthers while making 34 saves.
The Panthers and Tigers met earlier this season in Miami where FIU claimed the 3-2 win. After Toby McCallum and Alberto Cruz netted back-to-back goals in the 52' and 73', respectively, FIU would get goals in the 84' and 89' to make a comeback and break Memphis' five-game unbeaten streak.
