MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Memphis Tiger men's soccer team is in the middle of an outstanding season and has more to celebrate as Alberto Cruz, Lineker Rodrigues dos Santos and Colin Welsh have all been named to the American Athletic Conference Second Team while Cruz was a unanimous selection to the All-Rookie Team.
Cruz, a freshman out of Madrid, Spain, notched a note-worthy rookie campaign with a team-best eight goals while three of them were game-winning goals for the Tigers. He has made 12 starts in 16 appearances and is ranked in the top-10 in the AAC in game-winning goals, goals per game, penalty kicks made, points per game, total goals and total points. Cruz was also tabbed as the AAC's Rookie of the Week three times this season and was named as one of the top-100 freshmen by TopDrawerSoccer.
Rodrigues dos Santos, a sophomore from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, has been a big offensive threat for Memphis after collecting six goals and four assists in 16 appearances. He scored the game-winning goal in the team's win over Temple earlier this season and had the game-winner in overtime at #12 Tulsa in the opening round of the AAC Championship. Rodrigues dos Santos was named as the AAC's Offensive Player of the Week once and named to the Weekly Honor Roll three time this season.
Welsh, a sophomore out of Overland Park, Kan., has been the Tigers go-to man in goal with 66 saves in 17 matches. The four-time AAC Goalkeeper of the Week honoree currently leads the conference in minutes played and total saves while ranking in the top three in the league in goals against average and save percentage. Welsh would make seven saves in the team's 2-1 win over #12 Tulsa to advance to the AAC Championship semi-final, including a diving stop in the second overtime to save the Tiger's lead.
