Tigers Make Statement at Vanderbilt in Season Opener

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Memphis Tigers walked into Memorial Gymnasium Monday night for the first time in 25 years, and after 40 minutes of battle with the Vanderbilt Commodores, they exited with a season-opening 76-67 win in tow.
Memphis (1-0) shot 50.9 percent from the floor as a team (27-53) and won the battle on the boards (35-28), while leading the game wire-to-wire.
Senior DeAndre Williams and Kendric Davis led the way with 17 and 16 points, respectively and combined for nine of the team's 14 assists.
Williams pulled down five rebounds, recorded three assists, swiped two steals and shot 7-of-11 in 33 minutes. Davis added a game-high six dimes with three boards and two steals.
Senior Alex Lomax had a vintage A-Lo game, as his named showed up all across the box score. The fifth-year guard earned his first-career double-double behind 10 points and 10 rebounds, and added three assists and three steals in a team-high 34 minutes.
Malcolm Dandridge drew his 12th-career start and put up nine points and six rebounds with one thunderous block.
The Tigers came out firing in the first half, leading by as many as 17 points after shooting 51.9 percent (14-27) in the first 20 minutes.
Vanderbilt (0-1) was led by Tyrin Lawrence's 14 points.
UP NEXT
Memphis goes back on the road after getting a week off, traveling to take on Saint Louis at 8 p.m. on Nov. 15. After that, the Tigers return to Bluff City for the home opener against VCU on Nov. 20 with a 4 p.m. tip.
