Nov 19, 2022 | Women's Soccer
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Memphis Tiger women's soccer team made program history on Friday night after they took down the Bulldogs of Mississippi State 4-0 in the Second Round. They will now face #9 Arkansas on Sunday evening.
Memphis (11-5-5) got an early goal from Saorla Miller off a free kick on the near side. The Tigers would add to their lead in the second half after Mya Jones, Grace Stordy and Anne-Valerie Seto all found the back of the net for the victory and the program's first trip to the Round of 16.
The Tigers, who are undefeated in their last five matches, also got four saves from goalkeeper Claire Wyville as she helped the team to their 10th shutout of the season.
"It's an amazing feeling to finally make it to the Sweet 16," said head coach Brooks Monaghan. "We dominated for most of the game and the team needs to take that confidence into the next match."
Memphis has had balanced scoring during the season; while Jones and Miller lead the team with eight and six goals, respectively, seven other Tiger players have netted two or more goals this year while another four have found the back of the net once.
The Tigers are one of just two unseeded teams to make it to the Sweet 16 with UC Irvine being the other.
Arkansas (13-3-4) took down Ohio State in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament. The Razorbacks netted five goals behind two from Bea Franklin in the opening half.
After Ohio state scored in the first seven minutes of the match Franklin and Anna Podojil would net back-to-back goals to give the Razorbacks the lead. Franklin would get her second of the match in the 42' to put Arkansas up 3-1 going into halftime. UA's offense would not let up in the second half, scoring two more goals to help secure their 5-2 win.
For the season, Jessica de Filippo leads the team with 10 goals and seven assists while Ava Tankersley and Podojil have recorded nine and eight goals, respectively. Grace Barbara has been Arkansas' go-to in goal with 54 saves in 20 appearances.
This will be the seventh meeting all-time between Memphis and Arkansas. The last time the two teams met was back during the 2016 season where the Razorbacks netted the golden goal in the 93' of play to take the 2-1 final.
Sunday's match will kick-off at 5 p.m. in Fayetteville. Coverage of the match can be found on ESPN+ and on GoTigersGo.com
