MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Memphis Tiger men's soccer team will continue their season this Thursday when they head north to take on the Billikins of Saint Louis in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament.
"The guys have earned this, and it's been a challenging year," said head coach Richard Mulrooney. "They're put in the time and effort into it and am most pleased for them."
Memphis (9-5-4) earned the program's first at-large bid after finishing 5th in the power-heavy American Athletic Conference Championship. Alberto Cruz led the team this season with eight goals, which earned him an All-Conference Second Team nod and a spot on the All-Rookie Team.
Lineker Rodrigues dos Santos also made an impact on the Tiger offense this year; the sophomore out of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil notched six goals and four assists, including two game-winning goals for Memphis. Colin Welsh, who is ranked at the top of the American Athletic Conference with his 0.774 save percentage and 72 saves, has spent over 1,600 minutes in-goal and has been the Tigers go-to for all 18 matches this season.
Saint Louis (11-4-1) comes off their second consecutive A10 Championship where they claimed the crown after beating Loyola Chicago 3-2 on penalty kicks.
"We've got a big challenge ahead of us going into Saint Louis, but we're excited for the opportunity to play," said Mulrooney.
John Klein and CJ Coppola have led SLU this year with seven and six goals, respectively, while Carlos Tofern has allowed just 12 goals in 15 matches played.
Memphis and Saint Louis are no stranger to one another, competing against each other dating as far back as 1991. The Billikins and Tigers met back in the 2021 season in St. Louis where SLU ended up taking the 3-0 win.
Thursday's match is set to kick-off at 7 p.m. CT in St. Louis, Mo. Coverage of the match can be found on ESPN+ and on GoTigersGo.com. Tickets for the match can be purchased HERE.
