Nov 16, 2022 | Men's Basketball
LOS ANGELES — Memphis senior point guard Kendric Davis has been named to the Top 50 Watch List for the John R. Wooden Award, presented to the nation's top player, it was announced on ESPN's SportsCenter and ESPN.com.
Davis is one of only two American Athletic Conference players named to the list chosen by national college basketball experts. The Houston, Texas native was joined by consensus All-American Marcus Sasser of Houston.
In October, Davis was added to the watch list for the Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year award and was unanimously selected preseason First-Team All-AAC. He has since been included on the NABC Player of the Year and Naismith Trophy watch lists.
Davis was also tabbed Preseason All-American by a host of other publications, including Sporting News, Blue Ribbon College Basketball Yearbook, CBS Sports and The Almanac, while Dick Vitale named him to his All-Rolls Royce squads.
A 2022-23 Preseason All-AAC First Team selection, Davis is coming off a sensational season at SMU where he earned AAC Player of the Year after averaging 19.4 points and 4.4 assists per game.
In his first two games as a Tiger, the six-foot guard is pouring in 17.0 points, 5.0 assists, 3.0 rebounds and 1.5 steals per game against Vanderbilt and Saint Louis. He also leads the team, draining 10-of-11 at the free throw line (90.9 percent).
Davis and the Tigers return to Memphis Sunday for their home opener inside FedExForum against VCU. Tip is slated for 4 p.m. on ESPN+.
