MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The No. 13-ranked University of Memphis rifle team was edged by No. 9 Akron, 4697-4674, on Saturday at the R.F. Fogelman Rifle Range in Memphis, Tenn. The Zips (6-3, 3-1 Great American Rifle Conference) won smallbore, 2338-2307, while the Tigers (2-5, 1-4 GARC) won air rifle, 2367-2359.
"Today was a good day for us, particularly in air gun," head coach Morgan Phillips said. "Jack and Gabriela had really strong days, with Jack shooting a big personal best. We feel like we're finally putting some pieces together and excited for one last match against Kentucky next weekend."
KEY MOMENTS
• Freshman Gabriela Zych paced Memphis on Saturday, placing fourth overall with an aggregate of 1175. Zych placed second in air rifle with a score of 595 and took sixth in smallbore with a 580.
• Jack Kersey had great day for the Tigers, placing sixth overall with a score of 1168. The junior won air rifle with a total of 596 and took 11th in smallbore with a 572.
• Angeline Henry was seventh overall for the Tigers with scores of 577 in smallbore and 590 in air rifle for an aggregate of 1167.
• Kaylene Castillo (1164) and Sophia Cruz (1151) rounded out the top-10 for Memphis, placing ninth and 10th, respectively.
