Tigers Travel to Saint Louis for Opening Round of NCAA Tournament
Nov 11, 2022 | Women's Soccer
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Following their second consecutive AAC Championship and third overall, the Memphis Tiger women's soccer team will make the trip up to Saint Louis for the opening round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday afternoon.
"All credit goes to the girls," said head women's soccer coach Brooks Monaghan. "We've faced more adversity this year than we have in the last five season, and they put their heads down and found a way. We've been playing some of our best soccer the last couple of weeks and that's what win championships."
Memphis (9-5-5) stunned the American Athletic Conference when they took down #1 UCF in the semi-final match of the AAC Championship and got the game-winning goal from Shae Taylor in the 99' over SMU to secure their spot in the National Tournament.
For the season, Mya Jones leads the team with seven goals while Jocelyn Alonzo has added in five goals and six assists in her sophomore campaign. The Tigers lost just twice in the team's final 13 matches of the season.
The Tigers are making their fifth straight NCAA Tournament appearance.
Saint Louis (20-1) went a perfect 10-0 in Atlantic 10 play while sweeping the competition during the A10 Championship for their fifth consecutive title. The Billikins are making their fifth appearance in the National Tournament in the last seven years.
"They're very good and there is a reason their ranked 10th in the country," said Monaghan. "They are a very well-coached team and it's going to be a battle. We're going to have to put in a full 90 [minutes] to give ourselves a chance to win."
SLU is led by Caroline Kelly, who finished the season with 13 goals and six assists while Emily Gaebe and Emily Groark chipped in nine and eight goals, respectively. In goal, Emily Puricelli played and started in all 21 matches for the Billikins while making 44 saves and allowing just nine goals.
Saturday's match is scheduled for a 1 p.m. CT kick-off in Saint Louis. Coverage of the match will be available on ESPN+ and on GoTigersGo.com. Tickets can be purchased HERE.
