MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis Tigers head coach Penny Hardaway has announced the signing of Carl Cherenfant to a National Letter of Intent to suit up for the program in the 2023-24 season.
Cherenfant is a 6-foot-5 wing and a four-star recruit according to Scout's composite rankings and is listed as the No. 124 overall player in the 2023 class.
"We are excited to welcome Carl to the Memphis Tiger family," Hardaway said. "Carl embodies everything we are looking for in our student-athletes. He is a high-character young man who possesses a tremendous work ethic, competitiveness, and leadership qualities.
"His value to our team will extend to both sides of the ball as he is a versatile and athletic three-level scorer who thrives in transition, as well as a high-level defender who can defend multiple positions. Tiger Nation will love having Carl represent the grit and grind of the 901."
Listed as the No. 24 small forward in the country and No. 12 player in the state of Florida, Cherenfant currently plays for Calvary Christian Academy in Fort Lauderdale.
Cherenfant averaged 11.9 points, 3.4 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.9 steals per game as a junior in helping lead his Eagles to their second consecutive Class 4A Florida state title and a No. 5 national ranking in the SBLive/SI Power 25.
Cherenfant and CCA finished the year 26-2 overall and closed the season on a 12-game win streak. Following their 4A title game, the Eagles were selected to the inaugural State Champions Invitational to compete against the best teams in the country. Cherefant and Co. routed Sidwell Friends (D.C) 58-37 in the semifinals before blistering Auburn (Wa.) 71-44 in the title game to claim the first national championship in school history for the Eagles. Cherenfant led the way with 14 points, seven rebounds and four assists.
The 190-pound wing chose Memphis over LSU, Mississippi State, South Carolina, Kansas State, Virginia Tech and St. John's among others.
