MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Fans will get a first look at the 2022-23 Memphis Tiger women's basketball team on Tuesday night when they host Rust College in an exhibition game.
Memphis, who finished the 2021-22 season with a 16-12 overall record, made a name for themselves after they quadrupled their win total from the season prior, recorded the program's first 15+ win season since the 2015-16 season and had their best start to a season (6-1) in nearly a decade.
The Tigers returned a hefty portion of scoring from last season; three of the team's top-four scorers return this season, including fifth-year Jamirah Shutes who led the team with 11.6 points/game. Emani Jefferson and Maddie Griggs will also return this season; Jefferson ranked as one of the top free throw shooters after sinking 111 and Griggs led the team with 53 made three-pointers.
Memphis also returns Lanetta Williams, Hannah Riddick, Makaiya Brooks and Aliyah Green.
A few new faces will make their debut in the Fieldhouse this year as well; Destyne Jackson and Jada Wright come to Memphis after they played for Katrina Merriweather at Wright State. The junior and fifth year, respectively, combined for 10.8 points while Wright was bringing down just over eight rebounds per game and Jackson was averaging 1.65 assists per game.
Along with Jackson and Wright, Shelbee Brown returns to her hometown after she spent two years at Northwest Florida and helped lead the Raiders to a 2020-21 NJCAA National Championship.
Merriweather also added three true freshmen to the roster in Tanyuel Welch, Destiny Thomas and Serena Lee.
Rust is coming off a notable season where the Bearcats finished 26-4 overall and made it to the regional finals in the NAIA Championship.
The Bearcats return Zoe Alexander and Katie Blackmon, who combined for just under 15 points per game last year and both started in the regional final, while Blackmon led the team with 10 rebounds/game. Rust also brings back Faith Catthouse, Karyn Ford, Madison Riley and Niya McGuire from their historic 2021-22 season.
Tuesday's exhibition game is scheduled to tip-off at 7 p.m. in the Elma Roane Fieldhouse. Admission to the game is free while coverage of the game can be found on GoTigersGo.com.
