Tigers Head South to Face-Off With Bulls
Oct 27, 2022 | Men's Soccer
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Memphis Tiger men's soccer team will make their way south this weekend as they travel to Tampa to take on South Florida this Friday night.
Memphis is coming off a very successful week where they earned a draw with #12 Lipscomb and shutout Florida Atlantic with a 2-0 win.
"To come out and get a draw with a high-quality team this late in the season is amazing," said head men's soccer coach Richard Mulrooney. "Then we came out against FAU and as soon as we got that first goal, our guys were flying and had that confidence to secure the win."
The Tigers were in a sharing mood last week, Alberto Cruz notched the equalizer goal with 27 seconds left in the match against Lipscomb while Jovan Prado and Eric Primo recorded goals over the Owls. Colin Welsh, who was named as the AAC Goalkeeper of the Week, recorded six combined saves over the two games, including four against the Bison.
South Florida (4-5-4, 3-1-3 AAC) is coming off their biggest win of the season after they stunned #22 Charlotte with a 2-1 victory. With the match tied 1-1 heading into the final seconds of the match, USF's Brian Schaefer found Oscar Resano in the box who connected for the game-winning goal with just four seconds left in the match.
"For us going into the match, we just need to make sure we take care of business. Knowing that they {USF} just got a win over a team like Charlotte, they're going to be playing with a lot of confidence, so we have to make sure we do that same," said Mulrooney.
For the season, Resano leads the team with four goals while Ajmeer Spengler has added in three goals. Jackson Weyman has been the Bulls go-to in goal this season with 46 saves made in just under 1,200 minutes in goal.
Friday's match is scheduled for a 6 p.m. CT start with coverage available on ESPN+.
