Cross Country Women Claim Gold, Men Take Silver at Annual Blazer Classic

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – University of Memphis harriers finished the Annual Blazer Classic Friday with two team medals and a combined nine individual top-20 performances.

The women's squad claimed the top team spot with a total score of 76, eight points lower than the second-place finishers of Mississippi College. Chloe Figgins individually brought home a silver medal, leading the pack with a time of 20:53.1 for the 6k; this improved her previous personal best by 50 seconds.

Ashleigh Anderson, Brooke Mussche and Jalyssa Smith followed, all grabbing a top-20 spot in a field of 149 runners.

The men's performances combined to give them a second-place team spot, with an average time of 24:30 in the 8k. Payton Gleason paced the Tigers with a new PR in competition (24:00.1, fourth). Zachary Wyatt, Hudson Hurst, Anton Michna and Vincent Chenier rounded out the top-five finishers for the team, all placing in the top-20 out of 176 athletes.

Next up, the Tigers prepare for the post-season, with the American Athletic Conference Championships in two weeks. Hosted by the University of Tulsa, the meet will begin Oct. 28.
