MEMPHIS, Tenn. – University of Memphis men's and women's cross country teams are set to compete Friday in the University of North Alabama Cross Country Invitational in Florence, Ala.
The men's 8K will begin tomorrow at 8 a.m., and the women will follow in the 5K beginning at 8:45.
This is the third annual race for UNA. The Tigers last competed here in their second race of the 2019 season. That year, the team also started off with back-to-back race weekends with the Twilight Classic and UNA Invitational.
This meet will also include the season debut of two-time All-Conference performer Payton Gleason. Gleason did not compete last week in order to fit in one more week of training, said cross country coach Ken Frenette. Gleason most recently finished 11th overall (24:45.97) in the men's 8K at the American Athletic Conference Championships in February.
Frenette said that the top three runners from both the men's and women's team will be sitting out on the race this weekend. This includes Zachary Wyatt, Tate Wyatt, Vincent Chenier, Chloe Figgins, Solstice Saliba and Brooke Mussche.
"This meet also presents a great opportunity for the freshmen to gain a little more experience, along with allowing some of our sophomores and juniors to play more of a leadership role on the team," Frenette said. "We're looking at this meet to build upon what we accomplished and also look at what needs to change as we move forward in the season."
